Picaroon: Take comfort

Take Comfort

Picaroon

Take Comfort by Picaroon (Rebecca Gischel) pays homage to the poem of the same name by British poet Roger McGough and celebrates the magical power of literature as a source

of comfort, support, and inspiration. Through the written word, people can connect across space and time and overcome any form of separation. Past times come alive, foreign cultures become close friends and spiritual wisdom endures for thousands of years. Spaces for thought are expanded, utopias are built and even in the darkest night a good book embraces even the loneliest person like a hug.

The large-scale installation consists of a table with an old typewriter and 32 luminous objects. Initially, the atmosphere of the room is dark and tense and no object is lit. But as soon as a person sits down at the table and begins to write on the typewriter, the atmosphere slowly changes and unfolds a feeling of comfort. Through the process of typing, the interactive music gently shifts from tense to a warm and inviting mood.

Each of the keys on the typewriter is connected via radio with one light object each. When pressing a letter on the typewriter, the signal is sent to one light object which illuminates. Therefore, by writing a text, a beautiful play of music and light is created for all other people present.

The installation makes visible and tangible the otherwise invisible process of how the author can reach other people across the distance through the written word and connect them with each other.
