The piece revolves around the fluorescent lamp – one of the most common sources of light – which also emits many tones above 20 kHz. Using a special microphone, we captured these ultrasounds and translated them into audible frequencies.

The composition uses only these invisible sounds produced by the lamps. This sonic material triggers a choreography of light composed of 128 fluorescent tubes, arranged in the shape of their ultrasonic waveform. The sculpture is surrounded by a yellow filter – a color known for its ability to enhance concentration and perceptual capacity – engaging senses beyond hearing in the experience of these frequencies.

Limen means “threshold”: the space in between, the boundary of perception. It is a term that gives linear form to the structure and divides the space in two. The sculpture acts as a threshold between the limits of our perception – between the visible and the invisible, the audible and the inaudible, between what we can sense and what lies beyond.

Credits:

Commission: Art & Tech Days

Produced by: Creative Industry Košice

Co-producer: Klangraum Krems

Residency Hosts: KAIR Košice Artist in Residence, Artist in Residence Niederösterreich

Idea, Sound, Light, Construction, Software: Marc Vilanova

Production: Tatiana Takáčová, Ivana Rusnáková, Paula Haslinger

Studio Assistant:Rebeca Urízar

Installation Support: Gabriel Podolinský

Software Support: Alfredo Ardia

Special Thanks: Igi Ayedun, Michal Hladky, Petra Houskova, Anna Mária Trávničková, Miroslava Rybarova, Lisi Grand, Klaus Moser,Ernst Steindl and the Minoritenkirche Team.

Camera: Robert Rampacek, Tatiana Takáčová

Edit: Marc Vilanova

Color: Venus Villa

Photos by: Tatiana Takáčová

Limen aims to unveil the invisible sounds of our everyday life.
