The video works were produced during the Moving Image study module in Spring 2026. The study module is part of the Fine Art Lab espezialisation curriculum of the Degree Programme in Media and Arts. TAMK – Tampere University of Applied Sciences is a full member of the Tampere Universities community in Finland. In our art studies, the emphasis is put on contemporary art and emerging technologies. The authors of these video works are fine art first-year-, and exchange students. The aim was to explore the practice of moving image within a contemporary fine art context by creating a short video work.

I can’t feel where I end.

The footage is slow and the soundscape is a drowning, ambient soundtrack accompanied with odd, fever dream-like sentences that seemingly do not make sense, but when looked deeper, open up a window to one’s mind when dealing with extreme body dysphoria and dysmorphia. The masks represent distance from humanity as if feeling like an alien. The film describes the feeling of living in a body that doesn’t feel yours. Distorted self image can be a heavy burden that the person carries quietly without anyone noticing.

The film will have distorted characters and on the background track there will be different voices that are surrealistic and poetic, showing the audience the quiet voices in their head. The atmosphere is eerie and the color palette colorful, which is captivating. The surrealism conveys the feeling of detachment from humanity and one’s skin.

Turdy tutu 3022

Turdy tutu 3022 by Mette Nyman is a video work about image, self-reflection and digging deeper into criticizing ourself and others, the downsides of different lifestyles and how easily we judge them, what we do and don’t do in the fear of criticism and judgement. About finding a golden middle route between belonging and existentialism. In this piece we address topics with ballet like dignity and grace, as well as with a freedom and defiance known from punk culture. We progress through dance steps towards a life that looks like our own, trying to break free from the shackles created by ourselves and others.

Serotonin (2025) is a short video that follows a woman living a non-linear everyday life shaped by hidden anxiety. As she goes through ordinary moments, small events slowly build and show her inner struggle. Over time, this anxiety changes how she experiences time, space, and other people, leading to a quiet but deeply sad turning point in her life.

disk//space (2026) visually explores the feeling of burn-out, especially the numbness that comes after a demanding and stressful period. The seemingly everyday repetitive and brutalist footage reflects the exhaustion and dissociation that stress and anxiety might cause. The mix of edited footage and effects gives the atmosphere of a simulation that echoes our everyday life.

Driven by the desire to know a familiar yet unattainable moment in time, 2000 is an attempt to piece together remnants of an idea of the future promised to us twenty or so years ago. Architectural details paired with the rhythm of the city paint a stylized portrait of Tampere through the eyes of an alien.

The Long Way Home

A young boy wanders through fragments of memory and imagination in search of his missing family. Alone between the quiet spaces of a park, an empty playground, and the corridors of his apartment building, he repeatedly encounters symbolic visions of his mother through fleeting, abstract images. Haunted by loneliness and guided by these emotional echoes, the child drifts between reality and an imagined reunion.

As his longing intensifies, he finally gathers the courage to return home, believing he may find his mother waiting for him. Inside the apartment building, the elevator doors slowly open, revealing the figure of his father welcoming him back. Yet the moment of reunion dissolves abruptly. The boy is awakened by the relentless ringing of a doorbell outside the apartment.

What appeared to be a journey toward family was, in fact, a fragile dream shaped by grief, hope, and the desperate imagination of a child seeking warmth in emotional absence.

Sandcake combines raw film footage with playful hand-drawn animation, inviting you to take a stop at a neighborhood sandbox. Childhood, growing up, maturity and the loss that comes with it all intertwine in this little moment of time playing in the sand. Memories and emotions emerge as hands grasp the soil. The film explores letting go and grieving what we have lost, but also giving room for our inner child to flourish, giving ourselves room to play in a busy world where we are haunted by both our pasts and our futures.

The short film illustrates the loss of opportunities due to a fear of failure. Using the colour as a visual metaphor to represent the loss of opportunities, the film aims to act as a wake up call to the viewer, showing the consequences of inaction.

Dipsomaniac

Dipsomaniac (2026) by Otto-Oskari Heino is a two-and-a-half-minute video artwork created using stop-motion techniques combined with analog VHS camera footage. The work explores themes of addiction in an abstract way, with skeletons and bones portraying the main character and addiction presented as a parasitic unknown entity. Uneasy sound design creates a disturbing atmosphere throughout the piece. “Dipsomania” is an older clinical term for alcoholism or substance abuse. Nowadays, the term is used to describe an uncontrollable and often periodic craving for alcohol.

This short film by Nelli Savikko and Nana Hautala explores escapism, loneliness, nostalgia, and hope through changing seasons and environments. The film begins with energetic summer clips of festivals, friends, and nature, filled with warm colors, music, and laughter. The mood then shifts into late winter, where dull colors, quiet city scenery, and layered blurry footage and static noise create a more melancholic atmosphere. As the film progresses, small signs of spring and hope slowly begin appearing. By the end, the scenery becomes brighter and calmer, showing that even if life may never feel exactly like it once did, things can still slowly get better.
