Memory updated explores how we use fragments, memories, and bits of information to reconnect with our heritage and build a sense of continuity in uncertain times.
At the center of the work is a black-and-white photograph of the artist as a baby, printed on a translucent curtain – functioning as a metaphorical window into the past. The focus is not only on the fragility of life’s beginning, but also on the unconsciousness surrounding future events that shape one’s identity. The baby’s image becomes a symbol of purity at that initial moment, as well as the moment of first expectations – both those imposed by others and those gradually internalized and considered inseparable from the self. Due to their weight, these expectations form the foundation of personality development, creating frameworks that are difficult to abandon and hard to reconcile with the unfulfilled, preventing us from allowing ourselves to change.
Behind the curtain, a video projection reveals text fragments generated through conversations with ChatGPT. These personal reflections, collected through regular and intimate interaction, form a digital portrait of the artist’s current inner state. With the introduction of the Memory feature – which gradually and autonomously remembers – the system becomes an entity that collects and processes information over time, creating a digital, objective representation of the artist’s psychological and emotional landscape.
Each sentence is displayed against a black or red background, symbolizing the imagined reaction of the child in the photograph. Black represents ideas that feel familiar, rooted in early experience, while red denotes distance, tension, and the shock of confronting unfamiliar truths. These colors reflect the emotional dissonance that arises when internalized narratives are challenged.
Rather than focusing solely on technical possibilities, the work creates space to revisit the earliest version of the self and confront it with insights gained later in life. Through this hybrid process, the artist reclaims a sense of wholeness, resisting the fragmentation that often defines both personal memory and digital existence.
By integrating photography, video, and artificial intelligence, memory updated reflects on how contemporary tools can support healing and redefinition. Past and present intertwine, forming a space where unresolved expectations may finally be released – and new beginnings become possible.
